You launched your local SEO strategy two months ago. You check Google Search Console every day and nothing is really moving. You are starting to wonder whether you made the right call, or whether your agency is costing you time and money.
Why Google takes time to trust you
Local SEO does not work like an advertising campaign you switch on for an immediate effect. Google first has to crawl the new pages on your site, understand your business and your geographic area, then accumulate enough signals (reviews, citations, content, visitor behaviour) before it trusts you. Google says as much in its SEO starter guide: several months, sometimes up to a year, can pass before a new strategy has a visible effect on rankings. Moz publishes an annual study on the factors that weigh most in local rankings: reviews, consistency of information, listing content. These signals get built progressively, not in one click.
The realistic timeline, month by month
- Weeks 1 to 4: setting up the Google Business Profile, technical optimisation of the site, structuring local content. No visible effect yet, which is normal at this stage.
- Months 2 to 3: Google starts to index the changes. You sometimes see small shifts in position, with no clear trend for now.
- Months 4 to 6: the first concrete results arrive. Appearances in the local pack on certain queries, a progressive rise in traffic to your site.
- Months 6 to 12: consolidation. Positions stabilise and climb on more queries if you keep the effort up (reviews, content, consistency).
- Beyond 12 months: your local authority strengthens and becomes harder for competitors starting after you to catch.
Practical rule: open Google Search Console once a month, not once a day. Compare how clicks and impressions move over 30-day periods. A daily check only shows statistical noise, never a real trend.
The trap that breaks your results before they arrive
Most small companies that fail at local SEO do not fail because the strategy was bad. They change agency, keywords or priorities before the previous effort has had time to take effect. Every change of course resets the counter, and the investment already made goes up in smoke.
Rule worth remembering: never judge a local SEO strategy before 90 full days. Below that threshold you are measuring noise, not results.
