Paid advertising stops when the budget stops. SEO keeps working for you months after you write an article or optimise a page. For coaches, consultants and freelancers, it is often the most profitable lever over the long term. Here are the fundamentals.
Start with your main keyword
What term would your ideal client type into Google to find you? 'Business coach Paris', 'digital marketing consultant', 'web designer for startups'. Be precise. A keyword that is too broad is a battle lost in advance against sites with 10 years of authority.
Use Google Search Console (free) or Semrush to assess search volume and difficulty. Aim for specific rather than generic queries to begin with.
Optimise your title tag and your meta description
The title tag is the first signal Google reads. It has to contain your main keyword and describe your page clearly in 50 to 60 characters. The meta description (160 characters maximum) is not a direct ranking factor, but it influences your click-through rate. Write it to convince, not for the robots.
- Title: main keyword + clear added value, 50 to 60 characters maximum
- Meta description: a concrete promise + a call to action, 160 characters maximum
- Both have to be unique on every page of your site
Create content that answers real questions
Blog articles are the engine of SEO for freelancers. Identify the questions your clients ask in consultations, on LinkedIn, in the groups of your niche, and answer them in detail. An 800-plus-word article on 'how to choose a business coach' has far more SEO value than a generic homepage.
Write down the 10 questions your clients ask you most often. Those are your next 10 blog articles. The best SEO is answering what people actually search for.
The technical signals not to ignore
A few basics that make the difference: a site on HTTPS, a loading time under 3 seconds (test with Google PageSpeed Insights), H1 and H2 tags structured logically, images with descriptive alt attributes, and readable URLs (/blog/article-title rather than /p=123).
Build your backlinks progressively
A link from an external site to yours is a vote of confidence in Google's eyes. For a freelancer, the best sources of natural backlinks are the directories of your sector, mentions from partners, testimonials published by your clients, and your contributions on third-party blogs.
Patience is the key
SEO takes 3 to 6 months to produce visible results on competitive queries. That is why you have to start early. A page optimised today can bring you clients for 3 years. Start with the pages representing your main offer, then develop your blog.
The best time to start SEO was 6 months ago. The second best time is now.
